Racha Island
Lying off the south of Phuket, Racha Island (often split into Racha Yai and the wilder Racha Noi) is the answer when you want the clearest water within easy reach of the main island. The headline draw is Patok Bay on Racha Yai: a curve of fine white sand fronting water so transparent that boats seem to hover above their own shadows.
It is a classic day trip, and a favourite of both first-time snorkellers and serious divers. Calm, sheltered bays make for gentle swimming straight off the beach, while the deeper sites and rocky pinnacles around Racha Noi reward those with a tank and a little experience. Visibility here is consistently among the best in the region.
Beyond the water, the pace is wonderfully slow. A few low-key resorts, a handful of beach restaurants and quiet coves are all you'll find, which is exactly the point. Come for the snorkelling and stay for an unhurried lunch with your feet almost in the sea.
Highlights
- Some of the clearest water near Phuket
- Powder-white sand at Patok Bay
- Easy beach-entry snorkelling for all levels
- World-class dive sites around Racha Noi
- Vibrant coral and reef fish close to shore
- Quiet, slow-paced island atmosphere
Getting there
Racha Island is reached only by boat, so the journey starts on Phuket itself. Most visitors join a speedboat or longtail tour departing from a southern pier such as Chalong or Rassada, with the crossing taking under an hour by speedboat. Having your own rented scooter or car makes the run to the pier simple and flexible — you can set your own timing, avoid waiting on a shared transfer, and stop for breakfast on the way. From the pier, your tour handles the rest of the trip out to the island and back.
Best time to visit
The dry, calm season from roughly November to April offers the smoothest crossings and best visibility. Aim for an early boat to enjoy the bay before the midday tour crowds arrive.
Good to know
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water — shade on the beaches is limited
- Most snorkelling gear is provided on tours, but pack your own mask if you have a preferred fit
- Sea conditions vary, so the wetter months can bring choppier crossings and reduced visibility
- Facilities on the island are basic — carry some cash and take your rubbish away with you
- Take care with currents around the more exposed coves and follow your boat crew's guidance
