Maya Bay

IconicBeachSnorkeling

Tucked into the cliffs of Phi Phi Leh, Maya Bay is the cove that became a legend after Leonardo DiCaprio's 'The Beach' filmed here. Sheer limestone walls curl around a shallow lagoon of impossibly clear water, sheltering a crescent of soft white sand that ranks among the most photographed beaches in the world.

After years of closure to let its reefs and marine life recover, the bay has reopened under careful management. The result is a calmer, more protected experience: visitor numbers and boat access are controlled, and the scenery is every bit as breathtaking as the postcards promise.

It is a boat-only destination, reached on a day trip from Phuket. Whether you come by speedboat or traditional longtail, arriving through the towering cliffs into that glowing turquoise water is the kind of moment that stays with you long after you leave.

Highlights

  • The real-life beach from the famous film
  • Towering limestone cliffs around a hidden cove
  • Glowing turquoise water and white sand
  • Snorkelling among reefs and tropical fish
  • Reopened and carefully protected
  • Classic Phi Phi day-trip centrepiece

Getting there

Maya Bay sits on Phi Phi Leh and is reached only by boat, so the journey starts at a Phuket pier such as Rassada, Chalong or Bang Rong. From there you join a speedboat or longtail tour out to the islands. Having your own rented scooter or car makes getting to the pier for an early departure simple and flexible, with no need to wait on a fixed hotel pickup. Once at the bay, boats moor at a designated jetty on the far side, with a short walkway leading through to the beach itself.

Best time to visit

Come in the dry season, roughly November to April, for calm seas and reliable boat crossings. Booking an early tour means cooler light and the bay at its quietest before the day fills up.

Good to know

  • It is a boat-only spot reached on a day trip from Phuket, never by road
  • Access is managed to protect the reef, so swimming may be limited to designated areas and rules can change
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water, a hat and a dry bag for your phone and valuables
  • There is little to no shade, so sun protection matters even on short visits
  • Pair it with nearby stops like Pileh Lagoon and snorkelling sites for a fuller day
