Bang Tao Beach
Bang Tao is one of Phuket's longest beaches, a generous 6km curve of pale sand on the island's north-west coast. Behind it sits Laguna, an enclave of upscale resorts, golf and lagoons, which gives the whole area its polished, unhurried feel. The water is calm for much of the year, and there is always room to spread out.
What sets Bang Tao apart is its beach-club culture. Some of Phuket's most stylish day clubs line the sand here, blending loungers, pools, cocktails and DJ sets into long, easy afternoons. You can drift between a swim, a chilled drink and a sunset in a single stretch.
Beyond the clubs, the beach rewards simple pleasures: barefoot walks along the firm sand at the waterline, fresh seafood at low-key spots near the southern end, and big, uncluttered skies as the sun drops into the Andaman Sea.
Highlights
- Phuket's chicest beach clubs on the sand
- A 6km sweep for long barefoot walks
- Calm, swimmable water much of the year
- Glorious west-coast sunsets over the Andaman
- Laguna's upscale resort enclave behind
- Fresh seafood near the southern end
Getting there
Bang Tao sits on the north-west coast, easily reached by road from the nearby west-coast beaches such as Surin and Kamala, or from Phuket Town a little further inland. Having your own rented scooter or car makes the trip simple and flexible, letting you arrive when the light is best and hop between the beach clubs and Boat Avenue at your own pace. Follow the main coastal roads towards Laguna and Cherngtalay, then turn off down one of the beach access lanes.
Best time to visit
Late afternoon into sunset is the sweet spot, when the beach clubs come alive and the sky lights up. The dry season, roughly November to April, brings the calmest seas and clearest conditions.
Good to know
- The beach is long, so different stretches have different moods: livelier near the clubs, quieter towards the ends
- Beach clubs may charge for loungers or have a minimum spend, so it is worth checking before settling in
- During the monsoon months the surf can pick up and currents strengthen, so watch for warning flags and swim with care
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water and a hat, as natural shade is limited away from the clubs
- Boat Avenue and Porto de Phuket nearby offer cafes, restaurants and shopping when you fancy a break from the sand
